What is colon cancer?
Colon cancer is a disease in which cancer cells form and grow in the wall of the colon. The majority of colon tumors begin when normal tissue in the colon wall becomes pre-cancerous and forms what's called an adenomatous polyp. This polyp projects from the colon wall. As it grows larger, it becomes cancerous and a malignant tumor is formed. This process can take very little time, or a decade or more. The slow development of some tumors allows time for early detection with screening tests.
Cancer of the colon is sometimes called colorectal cancer, colon rectal cancer, and cancer of the colon and rectum. The rectum is also part of the large intestine, as is the colon. Colon cancer is a broad term that encompasses both colon and rectal cancers.
